History
Amnesty International (AI) began in 1961, to assist prisoners of conscience around the world.
Bellingham’s AI-USA Group 270 joined the movement in the 1980s, within the regional AI-Puget Sound network.
As AI’s objectives have broadened to include the full scope of Universal Declaration of Human Rights concerns, local residents and Western Washington University (WWU) students have shared AI Group 270 work for a quarter century, prior to a new campus chapter’s creation in 2016. We frequently collaborate with WWU's "Western Amnesty" chapter.
AI Group 270, like AI groups elsewhere, acts and educates locally and advocates at a distance through letters and petitions directed domestically and abroad. We all speak truth to power by lobbying nation-state executive, legislative, judicial and military office-holders, who are usually responsible for human rights violations and always accountable for their redress.
